What else happened that month?


Well…


Police in Essex made the largest cannabis seizure in British criminal history when a multimillion-pound stash of the drug was found on a schooner moored on the River Crouch near North Fambridge village.


The television series based on the children's books by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry and narrated by Ringo Starr, Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends was first broadcast on ITV. The character of The Fat Controller was thought to have been based on Rev. Teddy Boston, Rector of Cadeby.


The Bill, a police TV drama, aired for the first time on ITV.  When the last episode was shown in 2010 it became the longest-running police programme of its type in British television history.


BBC News news presenter Michael Buerk gave a powerful commentary of the famine in Ethiopia which had claimed thousands of lives and reportedly had the potential to claim the lives of as many as 7 million more people. Numerous British charities including Oxfam and Save the Children begin collection work to aid the famine victims.


Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India, was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards as she walked in her garden.


Labour Peer, Manny Shinwell, celebrated his 100th birthday.


The Provisional Irish Republican Army attempted to assassinate the Conservative cabinet in the Brighton hotel bombing.


The High Court fined the NUM £200,000 and Arthur Scargill £1,000 for contempt of court.
